Adventures in Writing, Reading & Book CultureBook Review Column
For a time I wrote magazine stringers for FLAIR, a Sunday supplement glossy lifestyles magazine. And then I pitched the editors a book review column, which I thought would work well in the Tampa Bay area and with the magazine’s approach to, you know, getting the culture out to the otherwise sun-loving, pick-up driving masses of Central Florida.
Once again, it was nice to know people and have your work well thought of, as the editors jumped at the chance, and I chose the format: a review of a newly published book, with a sidebar review (I called it a nudge) of some classic literature. FLAIR published 6x per year back then, and I wrote about 12 reviews. And then, as they say, life got in the way: I got the features job at a newspaper owned by the Tampa Tribune (publishers of FLAIR), who in corporate wisdom did not allow full-time employees to do freelance work for the company. Life goes on.
